Land Speed Record

Australia's world land speed record challenge website
National coverage on Aussie Invader with ABC's Catalyst Rosco McGlashan OAM is a "man on a mission" and not content with holding the Australian Land Speed Record, he is going after the ultimate goal of the World Land Speed Record. Rosco, with his dedication and proven ability, has enlisted a skilled team to build a car capable of breaking the sound barrier and moving on to 1000 mph.

The car is
Aussie Invader 5R and will run four
rocket engines, producing 62,000 lbs of thrust (about 200,000 horsepower). The car weighs about 9 tonnes fully fuelled and will be capable of accelerating from 0 - 1000 mph (1609 km/h) in 20 seconds!

Front suspension design starts to take shape 24th Aug 10

The front suspension has started to be developed with as many questions as answers being thrown up. One issue that has compounded the design has been the need to work without a forward bulkhead. This means that we have to hang everything from a rear bulkhead / mounting plate.

The proposed design has some really heavy duty engineering in it, as you would expect for a car weighing up to 9 tons and potentially travelling at 1000mph. It has meant sourcing rose-joints rated at 60 tons from Liebherr Australia's Crane Division in Sydney, who kindly sponsored us with these. Now we have to burn the midnight oil and run all the calculations we can to see if it will work as intended.

Aussie Invader II the current Australian Land Speed Record holder and Aussie Invader III the fastest LSR car to run on salt at 643 mph!

In 1994 Aussie Invader II with Rosco driving broke the Australian Land Speed record and became the  "Fastest Aussie On Earth" with an official 500 mph (802 km/h) 2 way pass.

In 1996 at Lake Gairdner, SA, Rosco
and Aussie Invader III recorded a speed of 643 mph (1026 km/h). At the time this was faster than the WLSR held by Brit. Richard Noble.

Aussie Invader III achieved 643 mph (1026 kph) in 1996 at Lake Gairdner, South Australia
